Synopsis

By using Amsterdam as a living laboratory, graduate students, researchers and teachers of the architectural design chair of Complex Projects at the Department of Architecture at TU Delft Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment have been interested in seeing how ‘growth’ and rapid ‘changes’ — growth of numbers of inhabitants and tourists, and change of energy, mobility, health and leisure concepts - will affect the City of Amsterdam on a time horizon 2050. How can innovations be introduced to the domain of architecture and urban design? The creative exploration presented in this publication aims to understand today’s structure of the City, to explore possible future scenarios and to speculate on new architectural typologies new technology and ways of living may construct.

Complex Projects teamed up for almost two years with Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions and the municipality of Amsterdam, to focus on the theme AMSTERDAM 2050. The book is a systematization of the work of more than 80 graduate students and 6 tutors with the input from researchers and invited critics on a case study on 9 different locations in Amsterdam. The research-through-design process of documenting and analysing the present urban conditions of the City of Amsterdam and investigating various trends directing future urban development resulted in design solutions and visualisations of the predicted development of these locations.

Author Biographies

Kees Kaan, TU Delft, Architecture and the Built Environment

Kees Kaan is an architect based in Rotterdam where he’s directing KAAN Architecten. As a full professor, he is currently Head of the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, where he is also holding the Chair of Complex Projects. His research focuses on large-scale projects that characterize rapid global urbanization. Over the years he has built up a national and international portfolio of architecture, urban planning, and interior design projects; notably the competition winning entry for the new terminal at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the new Courthouse of Amsterdam and the Supreme Court of The Netherlands in The Hague. He is an international lecturer and sits on various juries and boards, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Ivana Stancic, Independent researcher, Copenhagen Denmark

Ivana Stancic is a researcher and a project leader based in Copenhagen. For the past eight years, she worked on various design and research projects and publications related to future urban scenarios, climate adaptation and new design methods. Her work experience includes Bjarke Ingels Group, WE Architecture and EFFEKT in Copenhagen, FREE New York and XML Amsterdam. Alongside, she participated in research projects in collaboration with ETH Zurich and KADK Copenhagen and she collaborates on new urban planning methods with 300000km/s Barcelona.

Manuela Triggianese, TU Delft, Architecture and the Built Environment

Manuela Triggianese is lecturer and researcher at the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. She coordinates the master program for the Chair of Complex Projects. Graduated with honours in Architecture in Italy, in 2014 she obtained the doctoral degree at the Faculty of Architecture in Venice (IUAV). In 2015 she worked as visiting researcher at the Beijing Technical University. Since 2016 she collaborates with Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions and TU Delft Deltas Infrastructure Mobility Initiative. Her research results have been published in journals and international conference proceedings. In the role of Editor-in-Chief, she recently published the book Stations as Nodes (TU Delft Open, 2018).

Hrvoje Smidihen, TU Delft, Architecture and the Built Environment

Hrvoje Smidihen is an architect working at KAAN Architecten where he is actively involved in the development of the New Schiphol Terminal. He is currently leading the graduation studios of the chair of Complex Projects at the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. He completed his studies at the Delft University of Technology in 2014 with an Honorable mention. His final graduation project of Performance Centre in Chicago was nominated for Archi Prix. Hrvoje has been working on numerous projects such as museum PLANTA in Spain and GUZ University Building in Tubingen. Prior to his studies in Delft, he worked in Croatian office STUDIO UP.

Jelmer van Zalingen, TU Delft, Architecture and the Built Environment

Jelmer van Zalingen completed his Masters of Architecture at the Delft University of Technology in 2017 with an Honorable mention for his graduation project. Subsequently, he started assisting the chair of Complex Projects at TU Delft in the teaching activities of the graduation studios, as well as in the organization of a series of events, exhibitions and publications including the “Amsterdam 2050” book. He is currently a practising architect at KAAN Architecten. He has been involved as a project architect from the beginning in the New Schiphol Terminal.

Alexis Keng Yee Oh, TU Delft, Architecture and the Built Environment

Alexis Keng Yee Oh is an architectural designer and researcher based in Amsterdam. In 2018, she received her Masters from the TU Delft Faculty of Architecture under the chair of Complex Projects. Her current research is focused on future urban scenarios with a focus on the relationship between death and the city.
